Abstract: Different types of discourse completion tasks (DCTs) may elicit different pragmatic strategies. This study aimed to study and compare the two forms of DCTs on the elicitation of the occurrences of apology speech act. The participants for this study were 16 native English speakers and 16 Thai advanced EFL learners. The former group responded first to the open DCT and closed DCT the following week while the latter group completed the closed DCT first and a week later they responded to the open DCT. The responses from both DCTs of both groups were coded according to the apology taxonomy. The data were then analyzed and compared according to the frequency semantic formulas found by two different DCTs. The aim of employing the two groups of participants is to claim that which type of DCT can elicit more pragmatic strategies and frequency. The findings revealed that both DCTs can elicit 9 semantic formulas by both groups. However, the open DCT produced more frequency semantic formulas than the close DCT from both groups of participants. The findings suggest that the open DCT could be the appropriate instrument in pragmatic and interlanguage research since it may produce more strategies and frequencies than other DCTs.
