Abstract: In a multiglossic situation such as in Arabic
nobody speaks prescriptive Arabic in a daily basis. This
prescriptive Arabic is one pole and the regional colloquial
Arabic is another pole. Between these two poles there are
infinitely various lects. The prescriptive Arabic is the norm
which Arabic speakers want to reach as closely as possible.
The norm is an ideal one, not used in a real speech even
though it is used in writing. Through the analysis of
various kinds of deviations from the prescriptive grammar
I will think of what ‘standardized’ language should be. I
assert that the bi-directional intrusion between standard
language with prescriptive grammar and colloquial
language is to be considered in linguistic research and
education.
