Abstract: Teacher talk refers to the language teachers use to organize teaching and impart knowledge. Its research started in 1970s and has drawn universal attention from linguists and educators since then. However, research has been largely concerned with college English classes. This study intends to observe and analyze English teachers’ verbal behavior in reading classes of a Chinese middle school from 4 aspects: teacher’s questioning, directive, instruction, and feedback. Questionnaires are used to get data from teachers and students. Results show that teacher’s instruction is the largest proportion of the total number of teacher talk; students’ expectations of teacher talk are basically in concordance with their evaluations; the 4 aspects of teacher talk contribute to the realization of teaching objectives.
