Abstract: Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is a branch of Critical Linguistics, which aims at the exploration of the relationships among language, ideology, and power (Fairclough, 1995). According to CDA, there is a dialectical relationship between language and social context. The objective of CDA is to identify and analyze the ideology and power relations hidden in the discourse that has been taken for granted on most occasions. This paper is intended to study the interpersonal function of Donald Trump’s speech from the perspective of critical discourse analysis by Systematic-Functional Grammar (SFG) established by M.A.K Halliday. The study reveals that the president of the United States--Donald Trump tends to employ far more modal operators of medium value to realize interpersonal functions for political and power needs. The critical discourse analysis of Trump’s speech not only provides us with a different perspective of the discourse analysis but also contributes to the cultivation of the critical thinking ability, which is helpful in the further studying and research.
