Abstract: Ancient Chinese poetry has a long history. Because of its unique characteristics --terseness in language, richness in imagery and distinctness in rhythm and rhyme, it attracts attention of a lot translators at home and abroad. The purpose of this thesis is to make an attempt to study the translation of ancient Chinese poetry from the perspective of Nida’s Functional Equivalence.The author collect 55 ancient Chinese poetry and their translation from president Xi ’ s speech as data and analyze some of them in lexemes and syntactic level. After analyzing these data, the author find out that the Functional Equivalence Theory of Nida is applicable to the translation of ancient Chinese poetry, especially for the translation of ancient Chinese poetry quoted in speeches. In addition, the author concludes some principles of the translation of ancient Chinese poetry under the guidance of Nida ’ s Functional Equivalence Theory.
