Cultural Pluralism and Public Policy for the Realization of Social and Economic Rights: Indian Experience in Relation to Right to Education

Abstract: One of the important features of Asian countries is cultural pluralism. In a country where cultural pluralism exists, in the matter of formulation of public policy for the realization of social and economic rights standards differt from those of USA and Europe. Out of the two ideologies1 of human rights, universalism and cultural relativism, for a nation having cultural pluralism the latter is relevant for the purpose of realization of socio-economic rights. It is relevant to note that even the western societies, which have accepted cultural pluralism for developing strategies for the realization of human rights, are now thinking about the need for new norms.
