Abstract:
The Government of Sri Lanka is proposing to introduce an e-NIC which contains certain biometrics of its citizens. This will not only be a form of identification but also will be used as a mode of authentication when obtaining egovernment services. But what is noteworthy is that Sri Lanka does not have any data protection or privacy related legislations. Therefore it is mandatory for the government to introduce such legislations prior to the establishment of the e-NIC. There are ample standards and legislations available internationally for the government to peruse and to adopt suitably.
