Abstract: To determine the friction and wear behaviors of the novel WC-Al2O3 composite, reciprocating dry sliding wear experiments were conducted with a load of 10–80 N and velocity of 0.05–0.15 m/s against WC-6Co cemented carbide (YG6). The effect of applied load and sliding speed on the friction coefficient and the wear rate was studied. The cross-sectional morphology of the wear track was drawn to evaluate the wear loss. This work indicates that the friction coefficient evolution is divided into various periods. Different behaviors in each period were discussed. The transition period is found at higher loads, whereas it does not occur at lower loads. A stable increase in average friction coefficient was observed as the load was augmented, and the wear rate increased sharply owing to the severe wear. The wear rate is only less than 1 × 10-7 mm3N-1m-1 at lower loads. By raising the sliding speed, the average friction coefficient descended slightly and the wear rate remained at (9–10) × 10-7 mm3N-1m-1. The worn surfaces were analyzed using a field emission scanning electron microscope, which revealed that the worn surfaces incurred microabrasive grooves, microcracking, brittle fracture and a pull-out of the particles.
