Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess the viability of a line focusing parabolic trough concentrator for water distillation in the climatic conditions of Nawabshah, Pakistan. For that, a line focusing solar distillation unit was fabricated, installed and evaluated. The brackish groundwater samples were collected from different residential colonies of Nawabshah city for distillation. The characteristics parameters, namely pH, turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS) and electrical conductivity (EC) of feed (source) water and product (distilled) water was analyzed in the Laboratory. The average efficiency of the installed unit for removal of total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity was around 99{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}. The installed system produced 3.2 liters/m2/day in an ideal day. The properties of product water after distillation were found to be drinkable as per standards. It was found from the study that the system efficiency was directly proportional to the intensity of solar radiation and ambient temperature.
Keywords: brackish water, line focusing collector, parabolic trough concentrator, solar desalination.
