Abstract:

Titanium and zirconium carbonitride powders were successfully produced by nitridation of TiC and ZrC powders in nitrogen plasma using electric discharge assisted mechanical milling (EDAMM). It was found that during this process homogenous solid solutions of TiCxNy and ZrCxNy are formed. Solubility of nitrogen in TiC and ZrC can be controlled with high accuracy by varying processing parameter including milling time and electric discharge condition. Maximum nitrogen solubilities attained were 2.36 wt{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} in TiC and 1.34 wt{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} in ZrC. Samples were characterised using x-ray diffractometry, CHN combustion analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy.
