Abstract:
The combination drug therapy was more beneficial when compared to single drug therapy. For this we did our study in 3 settings. In 1st setting, in sub group -1 , 20 schizophrenic patients were randomly selected and were given Resperidone 6-7 mg(Group-A) and Resperidone 5mg plus Chloropromazine 25-50 mg (Group-B)(all were given orally)
In 1st setting, sub group-2 , 20 schizophrenic patients were selected randomly. We had given Haloperidol 10mg (Group-A) and Haloperidol 5 mg plus Resperidone 3 mg(Group-B) (all were given orally)
In 2nd setting, 100 ART patients were selected randomly.We had given zidovudine 300mg(Group-A) and zidovudine 150mg in triple regimen of ZLN – Zidovudine +Lamivudine+ Nevirapine(Group-B) (all were given orally)
In 3rd setting, 100 patients of moderate hypertension were selected randomly .We had given Atenolol 100mg(Group-A) and Atenolol 50mg plus Amlodipine 2.5mg (Group-B) (all were given orally).
In all these therapies, combination therapy did well.
In 1st setting, sub group-1 , (Group-A), in schizophrenic patients, in single drug therapy, Patients complained of restlessness, hallucinations, and painless swelling over the scalp 1x1cm) with Resperidone.
In 1st setting, sub group-2, (Group-A), patients complained of akathesia, neuroleptic syndrome,resteleesness,hallucinations with haloperidol as a single drug, and we stopped the treatment after 3rd week.
In the 2nd setting,Group-A, in ART patients , the development of anemia was more with zidovudine alone when compared to Group-B. (ZLN – Zidovudine +Lamivudine+Nevirapine)
In the 3rd setting, Group-A, Atenolol single therapy, adverse drug reactions were more when compared with combination therapy.(Group-B).
On lipid profiles there was not much significant effect with both the therapies.
So if the drug efficacy was well with lower dose In therapeutic dose range, the single drug therapy may be beneficial .In all other cases it was better to follow the combination drug therapy for the safety of the patients.
