Abstract:
This paper adopts the theory of critical discourse analysis proposed by Fairclough (1992) to analyze some CNN online news reports of America’s war on terror in order to demonstrate how the political and ideological interests underlying the news reports are naturalized through linguistic constructions as presupposed commonsensical accounts of social reality. Through the analysis, we can see that a pro-American and anti-Afghanistan ideological message is imbricated into the discursive structure of the news reports. The importance of this study lies in the evidence that it presents regarding the pivotal role discourse plays in the propagation of ideology
