Abstract:

Coffee is an export commodity which potentially contribute to the economic growth. However, export coffee worldwide is hampered by low production, low quality and inefficient of coffee marketing system. There are some factors that hinder farmers in improving the coffee quality as means also in upgrading their position within the value chain. Farmers are lack of access in credit finance, market information and trainings, while most of the value added of coffee production and processing goes to stakeholders in consuming country. There are many attempts to address these problems. One comes from the private sectors, such as projects by external donors and training programs by big companies. These are external initiatives and they are top-down partnership projects initiated by business and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).  In this paper we will analyze an initiative that is different from the former programs on coffee production. Motramed (In English: Mediated Partnership Model) is a local initiative from Indonesia which focuses on the production of Arabica coffee. In this paper, we will analyze Motramed as a new way of production networks of an agricultural commodity.
