Ever since antiquity Epicurus’ hedonism has been regarded as the reason why he proposed the abandonment of social life and the notion of political quietism, and thought that the ataraxic life would not be achieved by the engagement in public affairs. Against this traditional interpretation, I would like to, in this paper, argue that this is a misunderstanding of Epicurus’ ethical and political thought.
