Abstract:
Abstract—From a close reading of Nietzsche’s On the Uses and Disadvantages of History for Life, I develop a critique of the power of memory on moral, psychological, and epistemological grounds. I then articulate and defend Nietzsche’s claim that forgetting is an active and complementary power that is essential to the flourishing of a healthy person.
