Abstract:

Many artists, aestheticians and audiences are committed to the idea that nonverbal art is ineffable. Yet, as widespread as the view is, few have ventured to substantiate it and, to my knowledge, none have succeeded. An adequate model must account for three features, viz. the invariability of ineffability, its intentional character, and the significance of this character. In the following, I outline a model based on two claims: that the force of artworks is essentially functionless and that it is an indissoluble aspect of aesthetic content. With these claims, I argue that a more convincing and substantial account of ineffability is possible.
