Abstract:
There is a large body of evidence to suggest that many economies experienced a move to greater macroeconomic stability in the mid 1980s or early 1990s, but there is little evidence about whether the changes were uniform in their regional impact. In this paper we examine Australian employment data to determine whether there have been common national and regional changes in the volatility of employment growth. The results indicate that assessments of macroeconomic performance and related policy discussions should pay greater attention to the potential diversity in regional performance.
