Abstract:
The limbal stromal cells which reside in the limbus of mammalian ocular surface were reported to be multipotent or even pluripotent when cultured in vitro. However the findings remain controversial with lack of supporting evidence. In this study, we look insight the characteristic of these cells for their expression of multipotent and pluripotent markers and also their differentiation potential. Our results showed that the cells expressed mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) marker and able to differentiate into adipocytes, osteocytes and chondrocytes. Despite the expression of a low intensity of SSEA-4, the cells did not express the important transcription factors for embryonic stem cells (ESC).
