Abstract: This paper introduces an advanced concept of compact and sodium-cooled breed-and-burn fast reactor (B&BR). Several design challenges of high-performance B&BR are resolved by adopting an advanced fuel pin concept and innovative core configurations. At the same time, the inherent safety of B&BR is also improved by adopting a novel passive safety device, floating absorber for safety at transient (FAST). The performance of compact B&BR is analyzed in view of core lifetime, excess reactivity, power distribution and coolant void reactivity. A preliminary study on self-sustainability of B&BR is also discussed at the end of this paper.
