Abstract: Medical tourism is a term used to describe the rapidly growing practice of travelling across international borders to obtain health care. A study made by CII ( Chamber of Indian Industries) &Mckinsey’s in 2001 states that India’s medical tourism has a potential of about $1.48billion & $2billion by 2012, it shall account for 3-5 percent of the total health care market.Mangalore and Manipal are located on the coastal belt of Karnataka in India. Mangalore is tourist destination famous for its temples and beaches. Manipal is an international University town located 3km from Udupi the abode of Lord Krishna.One of the facets of this place which is vastly unexplored is the presence of super-speciality hospitals run by Manipal Group and other conglomerates. Manipal Group is a corporate conglomerate with huge investments in healthcare and medical education.This is exploratory study about the various features of medical tourism and the facilities available at Mangalore and Manipal which can be promoted as ideal medical tourist destinations.
