Abstract: Socio-economic preconditions play an important role in tourism development, as defined opportunity to develop tourism. We performed a comparative evaluation of the socio-economic prerequisites for the development of tourism in the countries of Oceania. From the combination of socio-economic prerequisites Solomon Islands, French Polynesia, Vanuatu, Fiji and Guam are allocated. The resulting rating of the socio-economic potential of areas is correlated with the number of arrivals. This suggests that the development of tourism greatly affected by other factors for the countries and territories in Oceania. These are primarily historical and political factors: the colonial past, the relationship of the colony and the metropolis in the past and nowadays, modern identity with a particular country.
