Abstract: SAW [1] is a Java toolkit for the development of very efficient autonomous Web applications. It reproduces the well-known triplet “Container – Entity Beans – Session Beans” from Java EE Web application servers. It provides several smart tools to easily develop dedicated server programs. It has been used for the development of a significant conference management online application and several less significant applications. After a short description of SAW, we briefly present the distributed architecture for SAW. Then we give a brief survey of Web content delivery mechanisms and we describe the caching techniques used in SAW to increase the efficiency, the scalability and the availability of autonomous Web applications.
