Abstract:

A team of 4 clinical nurses in an 8 bed medical-surgical unit were sponsored through the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) CSI Academy to bring innovation to the bedside through a practice improvement project over 16 months. The CAM-ICU assessment tool and ABCDE bundle protocol were adopted into the culture of the ICU and staff nurses led the education, implementation, and data analysis. In addition to the patient outcomes, the team empowered nurses to become change agents and leaders on the unit.
