Abstract: This descriptive research aimed to study the critical thinking ability in the course of Primary Medical Care Practicum of the 85 4th year nursing students of Srimahasarakham Nursing College, Thailand, in the academic year 2011. The instrument for data collection comprised a demographic data sheet and a critical thinking assessment questionnaire for the Primary Medical Care Practicum. The data were analyzed to find frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The results are as follows:
1. Most of the sample, 73 students or 85.88 percent were female. 52 students or 61.18 percent had their learning achievement in the course of Primary Medical Care Practicum in the fair level, and 36 students or 42.35 percent in the good level.
2. The critical thinking ability was in the moderate level with the mean of 3.59 (S.D. = 1.33). When critical thinking was classified according to its components into 7 aspects, it was found that the aspect of hypothesis setting had the highest mean, 4.30 (S.D. =1.35). The aspect of data collection had the mean second to highest, 4.28 (S.D. = 1.28). The aspect of identifying the problem had the lowest mean, 2.37 (S.D. = 1.35), and second to lowest was the aspect of evaluation, 2.64 (S.D. = 1.45).
The results of the study reveal to the teacher the importance, particularly, of critical thinking ability development in the group with the low level of critical thinking ability. That is, the teacher must apply teaching techniques and activities appropriately to the students in each level.
