Abstract:

Introduction Tobacco uses is the single most preventable cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Every six seconds approximately one person dies due to tobacco, which encounters one in ten adult deaths. Tobacco-kindled disease would eventually kill fifty percentages of current smokers. Smoking is the cardinal risk for cardiac diseases. Tobacco smoking causes addiction because of its content nicotine. Like heroin or cocaine, nicotine chemically changes the brain causing it to crave. Thus many smokers have a hard time to quit smoking. India has 285 million smokers and about 92 million aren’t concerned that tobacco causes heart disease. About one-third of Indian smokers are ignorant the risks tobacco postulate to the heart. Acute heart attacks were the major reasons for cardiovascular diseases in urban areas of Tamil Nadu mainly killing young people in their productive years. Major reasons of large percentages of those heart attacks were attributed to smoking. Former smokers’ tried quit attempts without assistance from anyone. These smokers were able to follow smoking cessation due to the presence of their illness or had self-motivation. Cold turkey method involves complete stoppage of smoking all at once relying only on will power to fight against nicotine addiction. Counseling assists people who want to quit. Counseling alone is effective. But the efficacy depends on the number of sessions of counseling. Types of counseling such as cognitive behavioral and motivational therapy have been proved effective in quitting smoking.
