Abstract:
Introduction In general, many patients had experienced moderate and severe pain after surgery. Postoperative pain may delay a patient’s recovery, reduce patient satisfaction and increase health care costs. For this reason, PCA was developed for effective postoperative pain control. PCA is postoperative patients able to self-medicate with small intravenous doses of opioids such as morphine metered out by a programmable infusion pump. The most important point of PCA is patient safety. PCA is most commonly used in hospitals in South Korea. The nursing protocol for PCA is not systematically in nursing practice and nursing school. This study was done to develop a nursing protocol for postoperative patient using PCA. Methods The study was developed in two phases: 1) the item of protocol was developed through literature review; 2) the protocol was ratified and its validity was tested. Each item were consisted of 4-point scale. Subjects were consisted of 5anesthesiologists, 6adult/fundamental nursing professors and 2acute pain management CNS. The period of study was Jan. 10. 2015 ~ Jan. 12. 2015. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results We identified 13 items of protocol of nursing management for postoperative patient using PCA. The validity score for each item ranged from 0.9 to 1.0. Conclusion The protocol of nursing management for postoperative patient using PCA would be very useful in facilitating the nursing education and connecting nursing practice and education.
