Abstract:

Inadequate capacity in making clinical judgment for patients with complex medical conditions is a major cause for novice nurses to commit healthcare errors. Current training on clinical judgment for nursing students within the opportunistic clinical learning environment has been inadequate in optimizing this core nursing competency. A high-fidelity simulation training programme incorporating the Tanner’s Clinical Judgment Model was developed to foster the development on every essential aspect of this core competence area. A mixed method study was conducted to investigate the effects of the training programme on clinical judgment ability of undergraduate nursing students, and to explore the essential contributing factors. Significant improvement in clinical judgment ability of the students was revealed after receiving the training programme with the successful factors explored.
