Abstract:
Objectives: The study aims to identify the functional and health status details of older South Koreans in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) and explore their care needs.
Methods: The nation-wide data set of the functional assessment results for the Long-Term Care Categorization of the older people in RACFs in June, 2012 were analysed (N=121,337). The Statistical Package for the Social Scientists (SPSS) program was used for the analysis. Frequencies, percentiles, ANOVA and t-tests were used for the analysis.
Results: It was revealed that older people in RACFs in South Korea have averages of 9.43, 6.20 and 1.47 functional impairments in Activities of Daily Living, cognitive impairments and behavioral symptoms respectively. The majority have chronic diseases and symptoms such as Dementia (63.6{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}), Hypertension (51.2{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}), Arthritis (33.8{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}), Cerebrovascular accident (32.8{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}), Back pain (24.4{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}), Diabetes Mellitus (20.3{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) and bowel (56.2{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) and urinary (67.5) system incontinence.
Conclusions: The study presents evidence to improve the understandings of how and what of health care services are delivered and should be strengthened in RACFs in South Korea. It provides health care professionals, service providers, and policy makers with an opportunity and directions to improve health care services for the older people in RACFs.
