Abstract:

Background: 9.7 million under 5 yrs. old and an estimated 4 million neonates (first 28 days) worldwide are either killed or disabled by vaccine-preventable disease (UNICEF 2009). Controlling and reducing the morbidity and mortality among infants through immunization, became the goal of the Department of Health in coordination with WHO and UNICEF in the year 1976. Despite such goal, adherence to DOH’s Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) has been a dilemma that has hit Iligan City. Objective:This study sought to create better understanding about maternal barriers to adherence of DOH’s Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in IliganCity Methodology:Descriptive Correlational Research Design with self-structured questionnaires validated through Cronbach Alpha was utilized in this study. Two – Stage Random Sampling Method was used in selecting 100 respondents. The statistical tools used to analyzed the gathered data include Percentage, Chi – square and Likelihood ratio. Results:The topmost reason for non-adherence to immunization is Childhood illness. Though not a contraindication,a staggering 100{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} ofmothers pointed out that minor illness, such as mild upper-respiratory infection, cold, loose stools, vomiting or even mild fever deter them from getting the child vaccinated. 92{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} and 86{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} of the respondents are unaware about completing 5 vaccines and “mass vaccination” is available for children with incomplete immunization, respectively. 68{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} of the respondents misperceive vaccine as harmful. 55{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} of them claimed that hectic schedule prevent themfrom immunizing their children. Conclusion:Strategies to breakdown the barriers to immunizationcompliance are not beyond our reach. All healthcare providers are encouraged to be patient advocates by ensuring that patients have been taught the basics of immunization. This servesas an eye opener to the government to continue promotingExpanded Program on Immunization (EPI) for it could save and protect the precious lives of our future generations.
