Abstract:
This presentation focuses on the necessity to aid new graduate nurses in identifying clinical issues in their unit and creating innovative solutions. The importance of the participation of bedside nurses in researching and integrating evidence-based practice (EBP) into their unit culture will be outlined using guidelines provided by Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk. The project being discussed is the new graduate evidence-based practice project. This initiative is a six-month project in which a cohort of new graduates is mentored by EBP-research council members on EBP research techniques. The work of the new graduates culminates in a final professional poster presentation to discuss the literature and potential for practice change within their unit. This presentation includes the tools and timeline used to help new graduate nurses at an academic oncology hospital address a clinical issue, and utilize evidence-based practice, to evaluate an effective solution. The importance of new graduate mentorship, resources used to educate new graduate in the process of creating evidence-based change, and the effectiveness of supportive nursing leadership will also be reviewed. Success of this project is exhibited in the high retention rates of the new graduate nurses over the past five years.
