Abstract:
Spirituality is a known issue in nursing; however, a current study reported that patient spiritual need minimally addressed. Many factors contributed including nursing education. Considering the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), the negative perception of spiritual care and spirituality might take the role. A study reported that students and the educators felt uncomfortable in discussing the spirituality in class. This feeling result in discussing spirituality only at superficial issue. While, Indonesian are religious people. Addressing the spiritual issue will not as complicated as secular people did. However, little literature discussed the issue. This study investigated Indonesian nurse students’ perception of spirituality and spiritual care. A descriptive survey invited post-BSN students that had been undertaking clinical practice in Central Java Province to participate. A convenience sampling applied. Exactly 187 students responded questionnaire. We used Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale (SSCRS) Bahasa Indonesia version for measuring the students’ perception; α Cronbach coefficient reached 0.74. The result came up that most respondents were female (59{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}), age average 22.6 years old, Islam 97.3{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} and lived in the southern area 49.7{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}. Average Score of total SSCRS was 67.2{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} (±4.9). The score of SSCRS varied by geographical location and subscale of spirituality was correlated positively and significant to the student’s age. It concludes that the perception of spiritual care was not associated with gender, age, and geographic location while the perception of spirituality was associate with regional location and age variation. This result will be beneficial in considering location background in teaching learning and teaching spirituality.
