Abstract:
In this paper, I discuss my journey to learn Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology for a study about the lived experience of foreign domestic helpers, who care for older people in Hong Kong. My reflections may be divided into five stages of learning: (1) realizing the importance of qualitative paradigm; (2) struggling between Husserl and Heidegger; (3) getting to know hermeneutic philosophy; (4) my unconcealment and concealment; and (5) revisiting the question of Being. While these five phases were not prescriptive for my particular purpose, they have facilitated me to comprehend the key concepts of Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology. The nature of this paper was highly reflective. I conclude with a call for raising awareness about the importance of phenomenology in nourishing possibilities and vulnerabilities of what it means to be human. Heideggerian phenomenology has allowed me to recover questions of what is happening to our world.
