Abstract:

Background: The concept of resilience is widely researched and gaining interest in the various healthcare and education disciplines. Due to changing healthcare landscape, nurses have to be adaptive to changes and be willing to deal with challenging situations. To date, there are no published studies that examine resilience among nursing students in Singapore. Hence, the aim of this study is to examine the relationships between self-efficacy, perceived stress, and proactive coping on resilience among students in a post-registration nursing program. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used. A total of 71 year one nursing students participated in this study. All questionnaires were completed with no missing data. The following instruments were used: Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, Wagnild & Young Resilience Scale, and Proactive Coping Scale. Results: The mean age was 23 years (SD = 3.3 years). Majority of the participants were female, Chinese, single, and living with parents. Multivariate linear regression models were used to test the study aims. After adjusting for perceived stress and demographics, self-efficacy was significantly associated with resilience (β = .18, p<.01). Similarly, after adjusting for self-efficacy and demographics, proactive coping was significantly associated with resilience (β = 1.48, p<.01). The inclusion of control variables in the simple model explained 30{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} to 31{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} of the variation in resilience. However, with the inclusion of more explanatory variables, the change in R-square was small (change in R-square = 5{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} to 7{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}). Conclusion: It is important for educators to understand the links among self-efficacy, perceived stress, coping and resilience so that effective strategies can be developed to promote resilience among nursing students.
