Abstract: Abstract
Purpose: Traditional Chinese medical body constitution (CMBC) is widely applied to assess health status in Chinese medicine practitioners. This study was to understand the relationship between CMBC and Meridian Electric Resistance (MER) in females.
Methods:
A single-group repeated measure was conducted with 36 volunteers and recruited by advertising in flyer form within the Eastern Taiwan community. An inclusion criterion was adult female and self-perceived in relatively good health, without fever, no drugs that could affect autonomic nervous system function were being taken. The study was funded by the Chang Gung University of Science and Technology (No. EZRPF380071). Participants’ body constitutions were evaluated by CMBC scale and Meridian Electric Resistances analysis device (MEAD). SPSS 19.0 was used for correlation analysis, parametric tests including paired t-test and p<.05 were significant.
Results:
The subject’s mean age was 32.4±8.5 (range: 20-65) years old. The test-retest reliability of MEAD is 0.97 in the interval of 30minutes. The mean CMBC score was 40.27±17.31 and lower than 50 which means the females has more cold body constitution. There were significant correlations between CMBC and MER in left small intestine (r=.353, p<.05), left san jiao jing ( r=.350, p<.05), right san jiao jing (r=.455, p<.01) in females. Furthermore, females have higher scores on CNBC has higher scores of systolic blood pressure (r =.378, p<.05) and diastolic blood pressure(r=.459, p<.01).
Implications for practice:
Disease treatment and prevention are correlation with body constitution in Chinese Medicine. MER could be one of indicators of body constitution, which could be taking into account for further development of Chinese medical system. By monitoring CMBC can understand individual physical health status, and as one of references to promote health and prevent disease.
