Abstract:Historic cities are faced with increasing challenges when coping with balancing historic conservation and rapid urbanization due to the lack of development space. Urban underground space (UUS) is well documented as an effective way to provide cities with sustainable development space. However, existing practices have taught us lessons that UUS planning is the prerequisite for sustainable UUS development. When applied to historic cities, UUS should be carefully planned regarding some critical issues, such as suitability, depth and demand, incorporated with the characteristics of historic cities. This paper provides insights for sustainable urbanization of historic cities.
