Abstract:Creative clusters are a valuable and dynamic tool in the process of inner-city regeneration. This paper analyzes the significance of creative clusters in transforming inner cities through their ability to introduce a creative sense of place which catalyzes cultural, community and social renewal. The main aim of this paper is to argue the position and contributions of interior design activities within inner-city regeneration and placemaking strategies. Through a review of current literature, a theoretical framework is presented to describe the placemaking perspective as well as the relevance to the inner-city regeneration in Johannesburg and the identified creative cluster—the Maboneng Precinct. Two commercial interior design case studies will be discussed to demonstrate the interior design contributions to placemaking and sense of place within the creative cluster. A theoretical, pragmatic interpretivist research paradigm will be used to argue that interior design, which is often marginalized in urban design strategies, is key to developing a sense of place in creative clusters.
