Abstract:Sand encroachment into urban residential areas and transportation networks in a frequently occurring phenomena in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The result of which creating various environmental hazards within residential areas, safety hazards in the transportation networks and is considered a major threat to the country’s urban infrastructure. This research attempts to model sand movement using factors such as wind speed and surface roughness using remotely sensed data and a set of meteorological parameters. The research further maps areas of high to medium risks of sand movement. Such information would be of great value for city and urban planner and transportation network developers in their daunting tasks of selecting the best locations for new residential areas and highway/road networks.
