Abstract:In a rapidly urbanizing world, the way in which cities are planned, built, operated and redefined has an enormous social, environmental and economic impact on human settlements. The struggle to deal with these pressures resulting due to urbanization remains a challenge for urban planners and local government authorities. Each city retains its own geolocation and cultural distinctions but shares common urban challenges in the areas of job creation, mobility, resiliency and improving the quality of life of its residents. The indigenous situation may vary in a city from macro to the micro level, i.e. the city to ward. Hence a comprehensive study of local problems and setting development priorities for the same becomes significant. The study analyses the set of socio-economic, physical and environmental indicators adopted from literature to assess the development status of wards within the Municipal boundary of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh; to unveil the superlative ward and least developed ward in a city. Quantitative analysis of those selected wards is done based on the available secondary data, and qualitative study is done on the basis of primary data. The development priorities of the residents are identified with the help of a primary survey, for enhancing the overall development status of a ward. Ward level development plan is proposed with an objective to ensure the inclusive development of ward and provision of adequate amenities to its residents thereby enhancing the livability of its residents. The study results in developing a tool that might act as a baseline to augment urban management, assist the government authorities and decision makers to understand how an individual ward within a city will feature in comparison to the other wards of the city.
