Abstract: Urban planning affects the distribution of urban thermal environment. In order to analyze and to mitigate the urban heat island effect, the relevant studies have proposed Urban Climatic Map (UC-Map) with temperature scale. The definition of the urban heat island is a special phenomenon of the distribution of local temperature differences. Yet the urban ‘heat island’ is actually the heat gathering, not temperature, while the traditional UC-Map is not enough to show the thermal status in a city. This study, a visualization analysis by data collection of the impact factors of urban climate, would try to understand the urban climate characteristics by enthalpy distribution instead of temperature alone and conduct the link with the actual urban planning elements and features, so that we could explore positive and negative associations between the enthalpy distribution map and thermal comfort in subtropical urban areas. This study, in view of enthalpy, investigated Daan District in Taipei City with mobile measurement for the urban thermal environment in spring weather conditions. Through the GIS Analytic Visualizations, we can build the enthalpy contour map and summarize the land use zoning map correlation factors. Then we overlapped traditional urban heat island map to explore the comfort range in psychrometric chart for the comparison of the geomorphological features associated with enthalpy, and elaborated the relevance of urban thermal environment with thermal comfort. The results show that the urban enthalpy contour map is quite different from the heat island temperature contour map. The enthalpy contour map is more precise for expressing the discomfort in the city and the characteristics of the thermal environment. It could be a useful reference tool for urban design to reduce the urban heating island effect.
