Abstract: As part of New Zealand’s National Science Challenge for Better Homes, Towns and Cities; “Urban Narrative” is a proof-of-concept research project aiming to create prototype digital ethnographic tools that enable towns and cities to becoming ‘listening organizations’ with authentic conversations and two-way relationships with local communities and neighborhoods by means of data storytelling that supports better decision making for future urban planning and design. The project works in partnership with Napier City Council and in particular the Maori and non-Maori communities of Maraenui. The paper reports outputs from public engagement in the form of priorities and guidelines to design future digital ethnographic tools for a value based approach to urban design
